“The Jewish Americas: Beyond Borders”

June 3-4, 2019

CALL FOR PAPERS

This regional conference, to be held on the UCLA campus, will focus of the topic of “The Jewish Americas: Beyond Borders.” The conference’s theme—to speak beyond and across the borders of Jewishness in the Americas—questions our fixed understandings of Jewish consciousness and identities, many of which have been re-shaped by modern national borders, in addition to enduring and powerful diasporic traditions. We encourage research that takes a relational approach to the topic of the Jewish Americas, one which does not shy away from identifying the differences within our Jewish communities, and probes the potential of difference as a lens through which to see beyond and across borders in productive and innovative ways. Specifically, we welcome papers that explore the relationship between Jews, Jewishness, and Judaism, as imagined and portrayed in literature, the visual and performing arts, cinema and popular media. Additionally, we welcome papers that interrogate the complex reality of Jewish socioeconomic, historical, political, and cultural life in the Americas in a transnational context.

LAJSA is by its nature an interdisciplinary association and we welcome papers that tap into different fields of inquiry and promote dialogue between distinct critical approaches. Papers may range in scope from the colonial era to the twenty-first century and we welcome comparative papers that bring a global (transnational or hemispheric) lens to their topic.

Papers may be presented in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes.

We welcome the proposal of full panels of 3-4 presenters as well as individual papers.

Deadline for the submission of proposals is January 21, 2019. Please send proposals to: LAJSA.UCLA@gmail.com

(All other inquiries and communication should be addressed directly to the conference committee representatives.)
