The AMIA Bombing 1994-2024: Commemoration, Justice, and Trauma

Latin American Jewish Studies, the journal of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA), is inviting interested scholars to submit proposals for a special issue to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires. The terrorist attack against the AMIA on July 18th, 1994, marked a shift in the public discourse in Argentina and within the Judeo-Argentinean community. Three decades following the attack, public calls for social justice remain unanswered and those responsible have yet to be brought to trial.
This special issue proposes to explore the multiple expressions of commemoration, claims for justice, and recuperation of the public voice to narrate, recreate, exhibit, and shape the trauma and loss after the AMIA bombing. Submissions are encouraged that approach the AMIA tragedy from a broad spectrum of multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives such as history, anthropology, sociology, law, cultural studies, literature, music, film, visual and performing arts. Questions or issues to consider may include: How to inscribe the ineffable and remember without converting the memory of the traumatic event into a ready-made commodity? How to represent the victims’ silence and the horror through words, forms, sounds and shapes? What shape and significance do the claims for justice for the victims acquire in the current cultural, socio-economic and political spheres?
Proposals may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese and should consist of a title, a 150-word abstract, author’s full name, academic affiliation, and contact information.
