The Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA) invites you to a timely and thought-provoking virtual roundtable exploring the academic, social, and political implications of October 7, 2023, and its aftermath in the context of university classrooms.

The terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel, which included the murder and kidnapping of civilians and the subsequent multi-front war, triggered a renewed global focus on Jewish communities in the Middle East while also fueling a troubling rise in antisemitism worldwide. These dynamics have reverberated far beyond the Middle East, surfacing in digital spaces and on university campuses once considered bastions of open dialogue.

This roundtable will bring together leading scholars to examine how the events of October 7 continue to shape the teaching and study of Jewish and Latin American identities in higher education.

Panelists:

  • Judit Bokser Liwerant – Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

  • Mariusz Kałczewiak – University of Lucerne

  • Ariana Huberman – Haverford College
