Call for Proposals
Teaching Latin American Jewish Studies
Special Issue of Latin American Jewish Studies
We are planning a special issue of Latin American Jewish Studies, the journal of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA), on the teaching of courses on Latin American Jewish Studies from a broad perspective.
For this issue, we are not seeking formal full-length essays, but rather briefer essays, based on personal classroom experience and approximately 1000 words in length, by colleagues who have offered courses on Latin American Jewish topics in Latin America and elsewhere. This category includes not only courses exclusively on Latin American Jewish topics but also comparative Jewish Studies courses with some Latin American content or Latin American Studies courses with some Jewish content. We would like your reflections on such issues as the ones listed below, though you may opt to share your thoughts on other aspects of your courses.
- What classes/courses do you teach? What kind of programs – undergraduate, graduate, or other? What type of student population does your institution serve?
- How long have you been teaching Latin American Jewish Studies? How did the opportunity to include Latin American Jewish Studies in your courses / program emerge?
- How do students navigate the connection between Jewish and Latin American cultures/identities/narratives?
- What challenges do you recall having faced while teaching Latin American Jewish Studies?
- Have those challenges changed over time? If so, how so?
If you are interested in participating, please send us a one-paragraph description of your proposed contribution to the special issue. Please send a brief bio-blurb as well either identifying your position as of September 2024 or else specifying that you are an independent scholar. Proposals are due by 30 September 2024. The proposals and the brief notes may be in Spanish, English, or Portuguese.
Decisions on proposals should be communicated by the end of October 2024. According to our estimated timetable, we will need completed 1,000-word notes by April 30, 2025.
Please send your proposals to Romina Yalonetzky (ryalonetzky@utec.edu.pe) AND to Daniela Goldfine (daniela.goldfine@uwrf.edu)
We look forward to hearing from you,
Daniela Goldfine (University of Wisconsin-River Falls)
Naomi Lindstrom (University of Texas at Austin)
Romina Yalonetzky (Universidad de IngenierÃa y TecnologÃa UTEC, Perú)
